Penalty Shootout is a 3D football penalty game for one to eight players. The goal and the keeper are on the big screen. In secret, the shooter picks left, middle or right on their phone while the keeper picks a dive left, stays in the middle or dives right on theirs. Every shot is on target: if the keeper picked the same side it is saved, otherwise it is a goal. Everyone else guesses the side. Played alone, it is you against a computer opponent with its own habits.
How to play Penalty Shootout
- Every kick has a shooter and a keeper. With two players you take turns, five kicks each, and the shootout ends early when one side can no longer catch up.
- With three to eight players everyone shoots and everyone keeps in turn, and each shooter faces a different keeper from one round to the next. Bigger groups take fewer kicks each so a game stays short: five for three players, four for four, three for five, and two for six to eight.
- The shooter taps LEFT, MIDDLE or RIGHT on a goal drawn on the phone. There is no power or aim to get right: every shot goes in on target, so the only question is which side.
- At the same time the keeper taps DIVE LEFT, STAY MIDDLE or DIVE RIGHT. If the keeper picked the side the ball goes to, it is saved. Any other side is a goal.
- Left and right always mean the same posts as on the big screen, which shows the goal from behind the shooter. The keeper's phone draws the goal the same way, so LEFT on every phone is the left post on the TV.
- Players who are not shooting or keeping guess left, middle or right before the kick. The big screen shows which way each shooter kicked before and which way each keeper went, so everyone can look for habits.
- Points: 3 for a goal, 2 for the keeper for a save, and 1 for a right guess. If players are level at the top after the last kick, they go to sudden death: each takes one more kick per round, and a player who scores when the others do not wins. After four rounds of sudden death the tie stands.
- Alone, you take five kicks and face five against a computer opponent: Babu loves the middle, Tony nearly always goes for a corner, and Kuttan remembers your favourite side.
Controls
Three big buttons on a goal drawn on the phone. The shooter taps Left, Middle or Right. The keeper taps Dive left, Stay middle or Dive right. Everyone else taps Left, Middle or Right to guess. Shooter and keeper have eight seconds: after that the game picks a random side for the shooter, and a keeper who has not chosen stays in the middle.
Tips
- Mix up your sides. Keepers watch the big screen to see where you kicked before.
- Keepers: most people favour one side, and nervous shooters often go for the middle.
- Against the computer, learn its habit: shoot to a corner against Babu, and down the middle against Tony.
